Gum and Bone Therapy

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is considered to be a primary cause of tooth loss in adults. While this kind of condition causes harm to your gums, there are instances that your bones may be damaged as well.

Gum diseases can range from mild to severe, from simple swelling of the gums to life-threatening conditions such as stroke and diabetes. Chronic gum diseases can also lead to loss of tissue (gums) and bones if not treated immediately.

Gum diseases should not be taken lightly and there are some ways to treat and even prevent them. We strongly advise our patients here at Napa Valley Dental Group to go for dental checkups regularly so we can catch and address any developing dental problem as early as possible.

The gum pockets around the teeth will be cleaned thoroughly to prevent damage to the surrounding tissues and bone brought about by bacteria. Here are some of the therapies done to prevent gum and bone damage or tooth loss:

  • Scaling. This process involves removing plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and beneath the gums. This will prevent bacteria from growing on your gums surface that may further develop into an infection.
  • Root planing. Root planing smoothens the root surface, encouraging better hold between your teeth and gums. Like scaling, it also prevents gum disease and promotes better oral health.
  • Medications. If scaling and root planing is not enough to kill off the infection in your gums, your dentist might prescribe your with oral antibiotics or oral rinses to eliminate infection-causing bacteria.
  • Flap Surgery. Dental surgery might be necessary if infection persists after non-surgical treatments. This process involves removing of tartar deposits in deep pockets and reducing the gum pockets so it can be easier for the patient and dentist to keep the area clean.
  • Bone and Tissue Grafts. Grafting is a way to replace or encourage new growth of gum tissues or bones lost to gum disease. This surgical procedure can reverse the damage by regenerating gums and bones.
