Gum Disease Treatment

It is not uncommon to have gum disease. In fact, studies show that an average adult usually develops gum disease at least once in their lifetime. Gum disease can range from mild to severe – from a simple gum inflammation to a more severe disease that can cause damage to the soft tissues and bones that support the teeth.

Poor oral hygiene can result in gum problems, and it can be worrisome since it can be linked to health conditions like diabetes and increased risk of heart disease. If you believe that you have gum disease, our dentists at Napa Valley Dental Group can evaluate your gums and provide treatment if needed.

Some of the symptoms you may experience include swollen and bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, pain when chewing, loose and sensitive teeth, and visible pus surrounding your teeth.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, you need to immediately schedule an appointment with a qualified dentist. Here at Napa Valley Dental Group, we provide treatment to patients with gum problems.

Here’s how it works:

  • If this is your first visit, we will check your dental and medical history to determine if there are factors that may contribute to your risk of gum disease.
  • Examine your gums using a dental ruler called a “probe” to measure the depth of your gum pockets if there are any.
  • An X-ray is also usually taken to check if the disease has already affected the bones underneath your teeth. Gum disease can cause bone loss if not treated immediately.
  • Your dentist might also perform a deep-cleaning method called scaling and root planing. This procedure involves scraping off the tartar or calcified deposits in your gum lines. It gets rid of the rough spots on your teeth where germs gather, causing infection to your gums.
  • A prescription medication may also be given to you to treat the condition. If your gum problem has already progressed, dental surgery might be needed. Flap surgery is performed if the inflammation persists even after deep cleaning and medical treatment.

If you think you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gum disease as stated above, see your dentist immediately before the problem gets worse. If not treated, you could lose your teeth.
