Root Canal

A root canal is one of the few treatment options to save your tooth or teeth from irreversible damage. The term “root canal” is used to refer to the natural cavity inside the center of the tooth, where the tooth nerves can be found.

Root canal treatment involves removing the damaged part of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting it, and then filling and sealing it to avoid future infections. This treatment has been proven effective to save damaged or decayed teeth that can cause more serious problems in the future if not addressed immediately. If you suspect you have an infection in the root of one of your teeth due to pain, Napa Valley Dental Group may recommend root canal therapy.

The Procedure

The entire procedure will normally require one to two dental visits.

  • During your first visit, your dentist will take some X-rays of your mouth to have a clearer vision of what is inside your tooth. This will also show signs of infection on the surrounding tissues and bones.
  • Once the infection is determined, the actual procedure begins. Local anesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area. The dentist will then drill an access hole on the damaged tooth to remove all the damaged part, leaving only the healthy part of your tooth.
  • After removal of bacteria, the dentist will clean the rest of your tooth and make sure there is no remaining debris. Finally, the tooth will be filled and sealed by using a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.
  • Then your dentist will restore your tooth by using a dental crown or filling. This will reinstate your tooth to its natural health and function.
  • Sometimes, a root canal retreatment may be necessary. This usually happens if the bacterial infection recurs or is not completely eliminated.

While many believe a root canal can be painful, it can be a comfortable procedure with the right dentist and staff. We have properly trained and professional staff who will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire procedure. Moreover, the benefits you can get from this treatment far outweigh any drawbacks or risks.
