Scaling and Root Planing

Also known as deep dental cleaning, scaling and root planing are performed to eliminate dental plaque, tartar and calcified substances that can contribute to gum infections. It’s the most efficient way to prevent gum disease from advancing to a more severe condition.

Dental scaling is the most common non-surgical way to treat minor to moderate gum disease. It is very similar to a routine dental cleaning except that scaling involves cleaning the areas above and below your gum lines. It can be done through the use of either a hand-held instrument or an ultrasonic instrument. Root planing, on the other hand, involves thorough scaling of the root surface to decrease the inflammation of gum tissues.

How It’s Done

Scaling and root planing will normally require at least two visits to our office in Napa, CA. Although the process is considered to be a minor dental procedure, it is a detailed process.

  • During your first visit, your dentist will conduct visual examinations of your mouth and make a diagnosis before proceeding with the actual procedure. He may also take some X-rays to have a better perspective of your gums and bones. Local anesthesia may be administered to keep you relaxed throughout the procedure.
  • Once your gums are numb, the procedure begins. Calculus and plaque above and below your gum lines are removed using a scaling tool. When everything is clean all the way down to the bottom pockets, the dentist will proceed with root planing. It involves smoothening out your teeth’s roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth.
  • Your dentist will schedule you for another visit after your gums have completely healed to check and measure the depth of your gum pockets.

After the entire procedure, it is normal to feel discomfort and even a little pain. Your teeth will also be sensitive, and your gums will be swollen for up to a week after the procedure. Your dentist might prescribe a mouth rinse to avoid infection and provide pain relief if needed.
