All of us have probably gone through that feeling of anxiety when planning to go to the dentist for treatment. But dental phobia may keep you from getting the dental care you need. If you fear the dentist chair, you may want to consider sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry uses dental, medical treatments that let patients enjoy a relaxing and anxiety-free experience in our office here in Napa, CA.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
There are several kinds of sedation options depending on the procedure and disposition of the patient.
- IV Sedation –Intravenous sedation used to be a common procedure in the past where a sedative is injected into the vein on the arm of the patient. The effects are quicker, and has been proven safe and efficient. It is also ideal for procedures that may last for several hours since you have the option to re-administer the medication or adjust as needed.
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) – The patient inhales nitrous oxide or laughing gas, which is a mild type of sedation as it helps you relax. The gas easily wears off as well. This type of sedation is most suitable for people who suffer from panic attacks or dental phobia.
- Oral Sedation–This is now the most commonly used form of sedation in dental procedures because it does not require the use of needles and is easy to take. Oral sedation can go from mild to moderate, depending on the dosage you take. Mild sedation is achieved by taking one pill, while a larger dose is needed for moderate sedation. You'll need to take it an hour before your procedure.
- General Anesthesia – This type of sedation will put a patient to sleep and it is best for surgical procedures such as impacted wisdom teeth extractions.”
Sedation dentistry can be performed by most dentists. It is also safely administered in dental offices, but if you have certain health conditions, it is best to inform your dentist about it before the procedure. A significant advantage of sedation dentistry is that it addresses dental phobia so you can get the treatment you need without worry.
