Teeth Extractions

If our teeth are not adequately taken care of, they will likely become damaged and eventually decay. Typically, a decaying tooth can be treated with a filling, crown or other dental treatment. In severe cases, a broken tooth that is already beyond repair must need to be removed. If you have a severely decayed or damage tooth, our specialists at Napa Valley Dental Group may recommend teeth extractions.

Aside from a decayed tooth, listed below are the other reasons why you may need a tooth extraction:

  • Loose teeth that can no longer be saved even with a bone graft
  • A full mouth where teeth may be removed to pave way for orthodontics such as putting on braces to properly align the teeth
  • Extra teeth that may block the growth of new teeth
  • In more complex cases, teeth may need to be extracted from people who just went through radiation or an organ transplant to avoid possible risks of infection
  • Growth of wisdom teeth that are impacted or are affecting the alignment of neighboring teeth

Two Types of Tooth Extraction

The first is a simple tooth extraction, a procedure that requires the removal of a tooth that has erupted fully. The tooth is first loosened and then extracted with the use of forceps.

The second type is a surgical extraction which is a more complicated dental procedure. This is typically performed if the tooth has not erupted out of the gum line or it has come off at the gum line. The dentist or oral surgeon performs an incision on the gum tissue to quickly pull the broken tooth out.

What to Do After an Extraction

Although considered a simple surgical operation, a tooth extraction is not to be left unattended. You need to follow it up with proper care to quickly alleviate the pain. Anti-inflammatory painkillers help ease the pain and discomfort, especially if you underwent surgical tooth extraction. To minimize swelling, you can apply an ice pack on your face near the site of the extraction. Bleeding is but a normal thing usually within 24 hours after the extraction. To control it, rinse your mouth with salt water as it also cleans the wound.

Do not take for granted any discomfort you feel in your mouth, especially if it has been a while since you last visited a dentist. If you think your tooth may require extraction, call our office at (707) 257-2400 to schedule an appointment. We are located on Jefferson St. Napa, CA 94559.
